Gates Hall, a new state-of-the-art facility in vibrant Seattle, the School of Law is also home to the Gates Public Service Scholars program and the Barer Institute for Law and Global Human Services.

The School of Law has an exciting new opportunity for a Director of Finance.

The Director of Finance position is responsible for leading the Schools financial planning and management, budget development, monitoring, reporting, long-range forecasting, Dean's level grant and contract fiscal oversight, and policy setting regarding fiscal procedures. The Director oversees annual budgets worth $35M across a total of 10 professional academic and research programs. This position reports to the Assistant Dean for Finance and Operations, and works in partnership with the schools leadership and administrators to oversee, implement, and provide accurate and timely financial reports for a wide variety of funding sources including state, research, gift and self-sustaining funds. The Director is a member of the schools senior leadership team, and represents the school at meetings of and on committees for university-wide administrative and financial leadership staff.

The Director has a comprehensive range of responsibilities in the realm of financial planning and management. The Director oversees two other finance professionals and the core services provided to the school including payroll, procurement, grant and contract management and financial reporting. This position is integral to growing and improving the financial planning and analysis performance of the school, meanwhile working with faculty, librarians, staff, and students to facilitate the schools ability to achieve their educational and scholarly goals. The Director will help lead the schools efforts to support the UWs Financial Transformation Program (UWFT), a $200M initiative to replace the UWs financial systems with an integrated system that manages the full suite of financial transitions and reporting needs. As the lead for the initiative, the Director will represent the school to the UWFT Program, and will facilitate the schools staff and system readiness for this major change initiative and help champion a successful end user experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Planning, Analysis and Management

  • Provide guidance and strategic partnering to the schools leadership, units, and stakeholders regarding fiscal management and planning of annual budgets worth $35M
  • Oversee the management and stewardship of state funds, self-sustaining, grants and contracts, endowment and gift funds, and other revenues and ensure overall compliance
  • Responsible for forecasting, budget reporting, variance analysis, and development and  maintenance of overall budget plan
  • Collaborate with the schools leadership team and administrators to oversee the sound financial management across the schools Juris Doctorate program, seven graduate law programs, masters of jurisprudence, and PhD in law, as well the Gallagher Law Library
  • Coordinate the schools internal annual budget and infrastructure renewal process
  • Oversee preparation, submission and management of state budget and budget revisions to the Office of Planning and Budgeting
  • Maintain and improves the use of streamlined, automated, and accurate financial reports to optimize the schools ability to manage financial performance within the UW activity-based and fee based budgeting environment
  • Preparation and management of core financial data in support of the Schools overall financial plan
  • Development and implementation of internal financial system controls to ensure integrity of all financial transactions in accordance with applicable jurisdictions, aligned with best practices, and preparedness for UWFT
  • Translate department objectives into financial assumptions for short-term and long-term planning
  • Ability to project schools revenue and expenses and developing budget models to guide the faculty and Deans leadership team
  • Compile, interpret, and communicate financial information to various audiences, including the school leadership, the faculty, internal and external stakeholders as appropriate
  • Support development initiatives to help prepare fiscal information to support the development and cultivation potential and current sponsors, donors, and other sources of gift revenue as needed
  • Partner with HR leadership to ensure compensation strategies align with the Schools overall budget plan, and that compensation obligations are met in accordance with University policies

    Strategic Planning and Leadership

  • Responsible for overseeing all fiscal operations for the law school including centralized payroll, purchasing, travel, budget, gift processing, revenue centers, accounting functions relative to all budgets (state, self-sustaining, gifts, endowments, grant/contracts, and etc.)
  • Develops fiscal policies and procedures for the law school to comply with all University policies and procedures and conduct with regard to fiscal matters according to the generally accepted accounting principles
  • Establishes and complies with operational work standards in the unit and assure that all employees are following the rules and policies set forth
  • Serves as an advisor to faculty and staff on allowable costs on budgets from multiple sources. Participate as a representative on institutional committees, as assigned. Consult with representatives from other agencies regarding fiscal matters
  • Develops and produces specialized financial reports requiring a high level of sophistication and complexity relative to the University and the School of Law. Prepares information and reports that forecast trends, analyzes performance results, and addresses financial concerns
  • Develops, modifies and maintains multiple record keeping and reporting systems for varied and complex sources of funding; develops procedures for implementation, execution, control and review/audit of fiscal operations

    Business Operations Management

  • Directly supervise two finance professionals and lead the finance team.
  • Supervise workflow, hiring, performance reviews, development and management
  • Lead School of Law finance staff in evolving fiscal operations
  • Ensure staff are appropriately trained and prepared to complete work
  • Develop, manage and direct the work of the finance office unit personnel, their financial system and processes and the flow of financial reporting

    REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors degree in Finance, Business Administration or related field
  • Six or more years of increasingly responsible financial and administrative leadership experience in higher education, to include reporting and analyzing financial data, policy development, compliance and risk mitigation, and advising high-level decision makers
  • Experience with a change management project for a large-scale business operations change, e.g., enterprise resource planning (ERP) software implementation
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills, and problem-solving ability
  • Proven capacity to effectively manage deadlines and ensure accuracy while responding quickly and appropriately to emerging and/or urgent issues
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software
  • Ability to supervise and lead a team of staff, as well as motivate, lead, and support the success of unit colleagues to enable school-wide success

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
