Reporting to and partnering with the President and CEO, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the overall financial health of the organization. The CFO will play a key role in assessing, planning, and managing the capacity required to meet the organization’s overall goals while ensuring timely, accurate and efficient financial management of the organization.

Principal responsibilities consist of overseeing all accounting and reporting functions including those necessary for auditing, budgeting, financial analysis, capital asset and payroll in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.

This individual will set the operating vision and direction for short- and long-term budgeting, analysis and forecasting in strategic alignment with the Executive Leadership Team. The CFO must balance a strong vision for the finance team with a hands-on approach to managing the accounting, reporting and financial operations of a fast-moving organization.

Accounting, Reporting, Compliance and Internal Control

  • Assess, develop, and implement effective and efficient financial systems and processes in accordance with GAAP to ensure effective internal control, accurate and timely financial reporting, and efficient operations
  • Provide critical financial information to the senior leadership and Finance and Audit committees of the Board around issues and trends
  • Oversee and manage the annual financial audit. Ensure strong operational and financial controls and that the highest levels of integrity and transparency are maintained
  • Develop and maintain the annual budget and oversee that spending remains within budget and that annual financial goals are achieved
  • Consult and advise management and the Board on accounting issues, compliance, and risk management
  • Maintain the relationships with subsidiary and affiliated corporations in relation to financial reporting
  • Manage finance, banking, and cash flow to ensure protection of assets, liquidity, and efficient operations
  • Provide oversight of the work of the Assistant Controller in all areas, including managing staff, working with auditors, strengthening, and enhancing finance functions and reporting systems
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and reporting requirements

Financial Management and Budgeting

  • Evaluate, develop, implement, and lead an effective annual budget process, working closely with the CEO and other senior management; oversee the development, updates and regular assessment and reporting of the organizational budget and multi-year financial forecast
  • Oversee timely financial statement reporting and variance analysis for management and the Board. Report to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors at least quarterly on the financial health of the organization
  • Manage the financial function so that monthly financial reports are completed and distributed to those who need them for management and oversight; budget modifications are made in a timely manner; reports to both public and private funders are completed on schedule; and timely and accurate financial analysis is provided to the CEO, senior management, relevant Board committees, and the Board of Directors
  • Develop and maintain effective policies to protect and manage the financial and physical assets of the organization
  • Set the highest standards of internal service in ensuring YouthBuild’s operations
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, both in interactions internally and in approaches to processes such as vendor selection

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of senior-level finance experience, including financial planning, modeling, and analysis, along with responsibility leading an organization through a successful audit process
  • Business or Accounting degree required; a finance-focused graduate degree and/or CPA strongly preferred
  • Proven track record as a capable manager with success in motivating a talented staff and in building strong processes in a complex organization
  • Demonstrated skill at working in close and effective partnership with executive management
  • A record of success in financial management in nonprofit settings, including fund accounting and management reporting and reporting to private and governmental funders
  • Track record in learning and implementing new finance and IT systems, including project management skills and experience training staff members
  • Strong mentoring and coaching experience in a diverse, high-performance work environment
  • Ability to prioritize and handle competing priorities in a fast-moving and complex environment
  • Experience with long-term planning, and the ability to switch between the details and the big picture and to recognize the importance of each
  • Flexible, energetic, with a high sense of individual responsibility and an ability to anticipate needs and plan accordingly. Self-reliant but also open and collaborative
