What is the position?

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and leading a high caliber team focused on enterprise-wide operations, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will play a key role in leading the financial strategy for HeartShare and its affiliates. The CFO will be a key strategic partner and advisor to the CEO and Board on all fiscal and fiduciary matters, providing leadership to guide and shape the organization’s financial planning and oversight including cash management, banking and governmental relationships, and investment planning. Overseeing a budget of $160 million, the ideal person for this role is a best-in-class financial manager that is also a big picture thinker who knows the numbers and cares about the details. A successful CFO will trust and empower their team, will be a collaborative and insightful leader who can balance strategy, team management, and systems optimization. They are deeply analytical and strategy-oriented, with the ability to gather insight from the numbers and use that to convey a story that will help shape the broader strategy. The CFO will lead a team of 6 direct reports and have oversight of a 65+ person finance and accounting team. 

What are the responsibilities?

Strategy and Systems

  • Partner with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team to assess organizational performance against both the annual budget and HeartShare’s long-term strategy; provide strategic recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis; make actionable recommendations on both financial strategy and operations.
  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and costs management in alignment with HeartShare’s strategic plan, especially as the organization grows and collaborates with key city, state and federal government partners and identify opportunities for revenue maximization and expense minimization.
  • Report to CEO and board finance, audit, and investment committees around issues, trends, and changes in the operating model(s) and operational delivery. Generate reports and develop tools to provide critical financial and operational information to the CEO and board of directors.
  • Collaborate with program leads and development staff to align financial management with short- and long-term financial planning and projections.
  • Serve as a business partner to the CEO on the organization’s financial, budgeting, and accounting processes - with an eye to continuously developing and improving systems. Assess systems, policies and processes and oversee streamlining and optimization of organization-wide financial policies and procedures to increase efficiency across the organization through the implementation of an enterprise-wide, cloud-based system. 

Team Management

  • Empower, support, and lead a team of high-level accounting professionals to ensure up to date numbers, efficient systems, and comprehensive reporting.
  • Mentor and develop a direct team by managing work allocation, training, problem resolution, performance evaluation, and the building of an effective team dynamic.
  • Engage other members of the Executive Leadership Team to facilitate cross-departmental collaboration that ensures that all financial, technology, and HR solutions positively support HeartShare’s evolving strategy, operational delivery, and data collection needs.
  • Contribute to the organization’s efforts to promote an organizational culture of collaboration, open and frequent communication, adaptation, alignment with a common vision, and celebration of success in achieving specific project and broader organizational objectives. 
  • Accountable for clear and thoughtful communications with all stakeholders and in particular, staff, to ensure an environment of transparency, clarity of mission and support while also demonstrating high standards of excellence and accountability.

Financial Management

  • Support and empower the Controller on all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. 
  • Work closely with Controller to ensure accurate cash flow forecasting and cash management. Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism that includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs. 
  • Optimize the handling of Lines of Credit and banking relationships; implement appropriate strategies to enhance cash positions.
  • Oversee budgeting and the implementation of budgets to monitor progress and present financial metrics both internally and externally.
  • Ensure a strong system of oversight and administration for all funding sources including government grants and institutional support; accurate, detailed records, and flawless grant reports essential.
  • In close cooperation with the development and programmatic staff, oversee preparation of budgets and financial reports. 
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors; assess and implement any necessary systems and reporting changes.
  • Oversee the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials and metrics for funding organizations and the board of directors; prepare and communicate monthly and annual financial statements.


What are your qualifications?

The CFO must be a seasoned leader with a minimum 10-15 years of financial and administrative management experience in complex, multi-faceted organizations. A CPA/CMA and/or MBA is strongly preferred, or commensurate experience that demonstrates exemplary strategic and financial acumen.

The CFO will have the following experience and attributes: 

  • An ability to evoke confidence and trust while also building a warm and caring workplace culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and implement systems that enable efficient budgeting and financial controls and quality, timely reporting. 
  • Proven understanding of how to collaborate with programmatic teams in order to manage financial systems that streamline processes to support the efforts of the entire workforce. 
  • Initiative to take on new projects and to strive for continual improvement.
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling and forecasting skills as well as knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for nonprofits; if coming from the for-profit world, significant nonprofit board experience is required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving mission-driven organizations over long periods of time; experience with organizations with myriads of funding sources including governmental grants.  
  • Proven track record of strong leadership and collaborative management skills.
  • Unquestionable integrity, ethics, and values.
  • Creative, innovative, and analytical thinker.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, guiding investment in people and systems, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies and shepherding change management across an organization.
  • Flexible and a self-starter; able to multitask while also being highly detail oriented.

What is the comp?

Salary range is $300,000-$350,000 per annum based on experience plus generous benefits which include:
